How much to fill when have deep ends

I have a deep side to my rink. I have it reinforced pretty well now that I lived the collapse of the wall. My question to ensure it is is secure am I better off filling it again all the way or in phases so that some of it begins to freeze. My thought is the weight of ice or water is going to be the same so either it will hold or not. Any thoughts or recommendations? Trying to aboid a repeated blow outThanksPatSee More

"We were out skating here in Iowa on Nov. 17. However, it took longer thus year than in past years and melted more quickly when the weather warmed up. If I had waited until the ground was colder, I may not have had those issues. Just some of what I…"

In pittsburgh, weather next 2 days in high 40s. Then goes to highs in low 30s and lows in mid 20s. Any thoughts on best timing to start filling with water. Should I wait for a couple days of the colder temps and then begin filling or is it ok to fill at the warmer temps. I have heard it may be best to wait until the ground is frozen. Any recommendations?

Ideas to Fill In Deep Ends of Rink

One corner of my rink will be about 16" deep.  Last year I was able to brace the corner and was fortunate to have a very cold weather so a good bit of it stayed frozen.  I would like to fill in that corner to save on the amount of water need to fill it.  I have heard ideas from using wood pallets to bags of mulch or sand and also laying down 4x8 sheets of insulation board.  Does anyone have any recommendations on what would work the best?  Trying to get ahead and plan out my rink.PatSee More
