Walls and liners questions and some input ...

I was wondering what most of you use for your liners. Also, how do you prevent it from being ruined by skates or sticks. Here's what I thought of doing for next winter, and I'd like some thoughts.

  • I'd like to build the boards and forms just the way we see them designed elsewhere on this site. However, I'd like to set up the bottom edge of the boards to three inches off of bottom of the rink. That way I'd have the a little three-inch gap and not worry about the bottom of the boards cutting into the liner.
  • Several inches higher, I'd drill a 3/8-inch hole through the boards and the brackets to hold up the boards.
I'd then take a 3/4 stainless steel carriage bolt to go through the boards and the grommet on the liner, holding the liner up and preventing the the bottom of the boards from cutting in.
  • I'd fill the rink up to the edge of the boards.
  • I'd also put some 1x4 boards along the bottom of the boards, painting them yellow to give the same look as the bottom of the rink.

The rink will probably be just 25 x 45 this year. But since my sons will be seven and eight next winter, I'm not concerned. Once we get into a bigger home with a bigger yard, I'll go bigger. The rink will be smaller than what I want for my size, but it still be nice.

Thanks in advance for any input you may have.

By the way, Jim. Love the drawings. Very beneficial. I appreciate your input.

I found out that if the walls are 18 inches or higher, I need a temporary permit. Sounds crazy. So I'll get it just under 18 this year. I want to really develop my sons' skating skills so that they'll be much better hockey players. The next year it will definitely be bigger.

Your idea sounds like a good one. I have 4' x 8' boards lining the perimeter of my rink. (Actually, 42" high along the sides.) See some pics on this website. I don't use the triangular supports, but have a system that has lasted for 21 years. See the pic I have included. This system might give you more space for a larger rink, as it doesn't have the supports sticking out the sides, if that is what you were going to use.
