Yes it's solid but the cracks do not seem to be going away. I've scraped off the ice that cracked bad. I've used slush to pack the holes. I'm going to flood tonight. Could it be cause by the extreme cold temps.

Help my rink is cracking I'm about 10 inches thick every time I water it. It cracks. And I can hear it cracking as it freezes. I'm not using much water I've tried hot and cold both make it crack

Building my first back yard rink and having some issues.  There is a 9 inch slope in my yard and I can't get the ice built up on the shallow end.   There are also several pockets that break when you step on them.   A 12 inch snow just dumped on the rink.  I have shoveled off but not sure what do do now.  How do I fix the pockets and build up the shallow end.   It is 7 degrees and will be below freezing for the next few days

Thanks for having me. Filling with garden hose as we speak. Our rink is 40 x 80 might take a while. Only our second year, looking forward to not having a broken ankle for this season

Rink is 20 x 40 and with the weather we've had over the past few days I hope to have it ready to go by the end of the weekend.

Thanks!

Thanks for the site!

Last years ring was 40' x 80'. This is by fourth year building a rink , I think of going with a 40'x60' this year and adding boards. Time will tell.

Try using some shutoff valves on the garden hoses.  I leave the long/main hose outside after I finish draining it.  Shorter hoses are fed outside from the laundry sink.

(see the pictures attached to my link).

Thanks.  So far so good.  Love the site.  Lots of great ideas and some great rinks.  Just getting started on this years rink...can hardly wait!

Yeah, always a backstory no?

1.  Back before I wanted to play in the AHL I really played minor league baseball.

2.  My brother is a scout for a MLB team and has been for 26 years and thinks Sabermetrics and MoneyBall is Horsesh**.

3.  So, I use this to p*ss him off to the best of my ability.

It works wonders!

Thanks for having me here.  Getting ready to build my first rink for my 8 year old and my 12 year old daughter...and ME of course.  I need all the help I can get.  I am sure I will be quite active here.

Thanks!  First rink in 2009 was 64' x 36'  - due to local "competition" I had to increase it to 72' x 38' :o)  -    Truly a labor of love.

Thanks for the welcome.  Will be doing my first rink this winter, need all the advice I can get.  I have a contractor coming out next week to remove stumps and skid steer the ground nice and level.  For now I'm just trying to round up supplies for the boards and lights.  My ATV may become a zamboni too!!  I'll post pic's when I can.

Thank you...looking forward to starting the planning phase of building my first rink.  I plan on building everything over the summer months in preparation to setting everything up rigt after Halloween.  I really love the fact that I can come to this site and get all the valuable information I need.

Hey the rink is still holding strong.  Got more snow the past few days so I will be able to make the walls higher.  I'm planning to go bigger next year and better lighting.  This year has been a great success and with the temps warming up to around -10 degree Celsius (14 degree Fahrenheit) we will get lots of skating in before the season ends.

Thanks.  I built a smaller one this year as I got my son into skating. Next year's will be bigger and better. My wife thought I was kidding when I said I wanted to put up a rink in the backyard. She's from Chicago. I'm from New England. I had to explain to her that all kids should be out skating during the winter. Next year's rink will be roughly 40x50. We plan to move to a bigger house in the spring of 2012. A pre-requisite of the house will be a big and level backyard.

Nice.
We started to water the ice yesterday evening to make it more "even".
The plan is to keep doing that night/evening.
And as soon as it will come down to -3 we will go all in and flood it.
You may follow the progress and the trophy at my blog.
Keep talking hockey!
