Todd - I use 2x10's and go 3 high on the deep end on which we had about 20" of ice last year. The stakes supporting the boards are 36" long perforated steel angles spaced 3 feet apart on the deep side. They held fine last year but after a couple of thaws the weight of the water started to bend a couple of them. I was afraid that one more thaw/freeze cycle would be the end of them so when it thawed on 2/12 and the forecast had temps above 32 degrees for a week I decided that was the end of the season. I've attached a photo that shows the set-up this year where you can see the stakes on the left (the deep end). I have a bunch of other photos on my page that might help.
