  • This is a very nice design! I am using a board design where the will be a 2 inch gap 6 inches off the ground to slip the liner in with a face plate attached above to cover the liner. I have designed a rounded corner but have been struggling with how best to make the radius. Your 30 degree sections are an excellent way to go! I was thinking of doing an 6' radius but with seeing your rink picture i am wondering if I should make my radius larger. How best to forward my email. I could forward my iPad sketches of what I was designing. I am using recycled auto part shipping crates that have 16" heights x 4' or 6' lengths that I am sawing apart into a 6" high section bracing a 2" gap and then the 10" section above.
  • Need jigsaw to cut the initial 30 degree section.  Once it is cut, just make the edges nice and smooth with a palm sander and then use that as template for the rest (9 total per rail).  I used to cut the remaining sections with about 1/8" extra and then clamp the template to it as a guide for my router.  That's alot easier than using the jigsaw to cut each section perfectly. 

  • Thanks Jim, I just sent you a friend request so I can give you some tips.  I also posted the following blog post back in August:

    "Finally managed to figure out a design to make round corners.  My rink design calls for the straight sections to be made from a 2"x8" bottom rail, 2"x4" studs @ 16" OC, a 2"x6" top rail and sheeted over with a full sheet of 1/2" G1S plywood.

    To ensure that my curved sections matched up perfectly with the top and bottom rails, I divided the 90 degree corner into 3 x 30 degree sections.  I did up a paper template for a single 30 degree section for both the top and bottom sections since one has to line up with a 2"x6" and one has to line up with a 2"x8", ie. are different widths.  Each 30 degree section was designed to fit across the standard 1/2" sheet of plywood across its width.  I made a composite section of 3 layers of the 3 X 30 degree sections for both top and bottom rails, screwed and nailed together.  Then all I had to do was connect the top and bottom rails together with the studs which were cut so that their height + the height of the bottom rail would be exactly the same as the width of a standard sheet of plywood.  This design gave me a corner with a 6" 10.5" radius of roughly 1/4 scale of a NHL rink."

    I can email the PDF of the paper template for the both the top rail (5 1/2" wide) and bottom rail (7 1/2" wide) if you want.  You will just need to print out the templates to scale on A0 paper if your office has a plotter, otherwise take it to Staples, Office Depot, Kinkos, etc. and get them to print it for you.

  • Nice boards, I am building a 45'x90'
  • Just finished doing a trial fit of my boards (95' x 46'). Going to break it all down and take the sections into my garage in the background once it is done so I can paint them and apply the company logos.
