Tractor zamboni

Soon grew tired of schlepping 200' of heavy rubber hose across the front lawn from the utility room sink. Nothing that a sprayer tank and some PVC couldn't fix.

  • I'd love to send us both some cold James, unfortunately, there aren't any cold temps in MN this winter to send your way.   Can't believe the run of 40 degree days.  Seems like we'll have 2-3 nice skating days and then 3-4 warm days nearly every week.   On the up side, I took the two most recent 40+ days and spent them in the garage piecing together tractor zamboni 3.0 (the one pictured above was 2.0).   Once I get it finished I'll post some pics - assuming the thing works.

  • Someday I am going to have one of those!  Nice job.  Thanks for the inspiration.  I take it you live in MN?  Could you spare some of those famous cold temps?  I'll gladly trade some of our lake-effect Buffalo snow.  Will keep looking for your Zamboni images and successes.

  • Moose-
I did rig a shutoff handle that I could reach while driving. I notched a 3' length of PVC to fit over the shutoff valve handle then put a PVC tee on the other end so I could grab it and rotate the valve without hopping off the tractor. If you look closely, you can just see the valve at the base of the tank and PVC "handle" sticking up behind my right elbow (behind the tank).

Worked well as I filled the tank in my garage with a short length of hose from my utility sink then could drive out to the ice and start flooding without missing a beat. Also let me conserve water around turns or when driving over areas I had already covered.

    Gotta love PVC
  • Nice rig....nice set up.

Do you have a water shut-off that can be reached from the sitting position? Or is the water always on until you get off and shut it off?

I'm thinking of building a Zamboni myself...Just looking for any issues that you may have had with your set-up.

    Thanks,

    Moose

  • Was a 35 gallon tank. The pond was roughly an oval about 50'x140' at its widest/longest. Usually needed 2.5 tanks to resurface completely. Could get away with 2 tanks after a fairly light skate.
  • Nice. How many gallon tank is that, and how big of rink?
